FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Amenities Increase at Hondo for The Texas
Fly-In this May
A one-day pancake breakfast gathering of
home-built airplanes can get by with pot-luck
and porta-potties, but a four-day festival of
Experimental Aircraft builders and admirers
needs more attention to the many needs of its
visitors.
So it is at Hondo Airfield in Hondo, Texas,
where for a second year
The EAA Texas Fly-In will take place this May
11th through 14th -
Mother's Day. Work is under way to make all
kinds of amenities
available for EAA members, their families and
just plain people who find both the process and
the product of building one's own airplane
intriguing.
Aircraft camping - arriving at the Fly-In in
one's airplane carrying
a tent with the aim of pitching it near the
plane and spending at
least one night under the stars - is a large
part of EAA Airventure
in Oshkosh and a growing thing at EAA Regional
Fly-Ins of which the Southwest Regional is
one. Aircraft camping is a lot more fun if the
campers have convenient showers. Work began
this first week of March on showers located
within walking distance of the area reserved for
aircraft camping at Hondo.
The bathing facility will include six stalls for
women and six for
men, situated about one hundred yards from the
east end of runway 08-26 where aircraft campers
can tie down on the ramp and pitch their tents
on adjacent turf. These showers, new this year,
will supplement showers in the City of Hondo
Recreation Center located about one quarter mile
south of aircraft camping.
The City Recreation Center is across the street
from the City's
nine-hole golf course, which welcomes any
aviation visitors who are able to tear
themselves away from inspecting airplanes long
enough to knock a few little dimpled white balls
around the greens.
Aircraft camping is adjacent to four-wheeled RV
camping, also very
popular with members of the Experimental
Aircraft Association,
especially those whose family can't all fit in
an airplane, or who
prefer to do their camping adventures in higher
style than a tent.
This May, additional electric hook-ups for
highway RVs will be
provided.
For the benefit of folks who prefer to keep
close control over their
pocket cash, an Automatic Teller Machine will be
located on the Hondo Airfield this year. It
will be furnished through the cooperation of the
world-famous Security Services Federal Credit
Union, based in San Antonio.
Amenities for visitors are one area of
improvement. The convenience of commercial
exhibitors is also being enhanced. At The EAA
Texas Fly-In of 2006 there will be free Wi-Fi on
the Hondo Airfield for exhibitors. Many of them
rely on internet access to conduct business, so
the ability to log in to a strong local wi-fi
access point is important. Three different
access points for wi-fi will operate to feed
signals to a high-speed data link operating
through an earth satellite.
Everybody plan to attend May 11th through
Mothers' Day, May 14th at The EAA Texas Fly-In
on the Hondo Municipal Airfield, Hondo, Texas.
Further information of every kind, including
flight approach control,
lodging, camping, advance reservations,
admission, schedule of events and pictures of
award-winning airplanes can be found on the
official Texas Fly-In web site at
www.swrfi.org.
